When I was growing up, Brandy was TV star, reality star, a pop star, a Cover girl, Grammy winner, had her own Brandy doll, and was the first African American to play Disney princess Cinderella. Most importantly, she is a survivor. Many only judge and remember a person’s most recent failure.
When I was young I was listening to the Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child. I was singing ‘Independent Woman’ and ‘Survivor,’ and it was all about Girl Power and being with your friends. I don’t think I was singing, ‘Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?’
When Oscar Niemeyer died on December 5, 2012, ten days before his 105th birthday, he was universally regarded as the very last of the twentieth century’s major architectural masters, an astonishing survivor whose most famous accomplishment, Brasilia, was the climactic episode of utopian High Modern urbanism.
When they picked the people for ‘Survivor,’ they wanted 15 fouled-up people and one normal person. I was the normal person, in my opinion. I’d have bet a million bucks I was gonna win.

Yes, ‘Black Girl/White Girl’ might be described as a ‘coming-of-age’ novel, at least for the survivor Genna. It is also intended as a comment on race relations in America more generally: we are ‘roommates’ with one another, but how well do we know one another?
Joyce Carol Oates
Yes, I’ve been very preoccupied with the survivor all through my work.

You can be a victim of cancer, or a survivor of cancer. It’s a mindset.
You know, I suffer kind of from survivor’s guilt. It’s like you suffer from success because you feel like – why me? Why am I so special? What makes me so different from the next man and why am I able to achieve these things that this person can’t? Prayer is the only thing that helps me get through it.
You know, one race will not be a survivor if the other one dies, and that’s something that we should think about.
You look at ‘Survivor’s Remorse.’ Or ‘Blackish.’ Or Issa Rae’s brilliant, funny ‘Insecure,’ which started out on YouTube but is now on HBO. And you see multifaceted representations of the African-American experience. It’s insanely exciting.
You recognize a survivor when you see one. You recognize a fighter when you see one.
You see the images that the public is demanding. Why more reality-based TV? You’d think that after the first Survivor it would have gone away, but it hasn’t. The public demands it because they get all caught up in the personal stories, and want to see more and more.
