I never judge myself according to the expectations of others. I judge myself by the jobs I’ve been given over the years and by the extent to which I succeeded in those jobs.
I never wanted to be a public figure. I feel that I always have to dampen down people’s expectations. They expect me to be an oracle, wave a magic wand, sprinkle some slow, sparkly dust on them, to make everything all right.
I nursed Mason for 14 months and Penelope for 16, and I loved it. It was built-in time that the two of us could share alone every day. I didn’t have any goals or expectations.
I originally invested in Dropcam because I foresaw what the company and their products could do for consumers and the industry. I’ve been deeply impressed with what they’ve done in such little time, and I’m confident that they’ll continue to exceed my expectations.
I really don’t want to do anything that resembles stand-up comedy. But I will agree to say that I am doing it, and I will hope that people expect it to be that, so I can thwart those expectations.
I really felt like ‘Chandelier’ was a big pop song. But we weren’t sure what would happen if I wasn’t willing to show my face and do promo and go on tour and do the traditional kind of pop strategy. So I had no expectations.
I really try to wake up with my music the same as I do with my life, and that is with no expectations. I just feel what I feel that day and follow it.
I remember the absolute joy I used to get out of writing. The purity of imagining something and then putting it down on paper – it was such a pleasure. I read whatever I could get my hands on, from ‘Great Expectations’ to ‘The Thorn Birds.’
I set pretty high expectations for myself, and I hold myself to a pretty high standard.
I spent an awful lot of my life underestimating myself and, as a result, not exceeding my own expectations.
I still think in this country, and this might surprise you, the one thing that George Bush said as president that I do agree with, I love that phrase, ‘the soft bigotry of low expectations.’
I support safeguarding users’ personally identifiable information and sensitive data like health or financial records. I also believe the government has a responsibility to punish deceptive and unfair practices that defy reasonable expectations about consumers’ privacy.

I think expectations of ‘Doctor Who’ should always be high, because it’s a show that must always progress and get better and better.
I think I can be pretty focused, but as I say, it was more wanting to be the good student, seeing myself as a good student, and also, my parents had expectations. They wouldn’t have cared if I got a B or a C or even a D.
I think I don’t really have any expectations; I don’t look at the season as a whole – I look at it race by race.
I think it is really important that people at least have some potentially difficult discussions about what their expectations are – and not just financially – prior to getting married. It should really even happen prior to people living together or casting their lot together.
I think it will be helpful to people because I know the expectations that are put on you as a sex symbol, and how Marilyn Monroe suffered and so on, and I was able to get free of that.
I think it’s a problem when something’s a dream because it’ll never live up to your expectations. It’s better to go somewhere thinking it’ll be horrible, and then be pleasantly surprised.
I think it’s part of the responsibility of an artist to shock, to upset, to make people think differently, and to surprise people. And that’s where the good humor is, if there’s a surprise and there’s something unexpected. Something that’s not normal, not in the realm of general living expectations.
I think my expectations for myself are much more severe and much more direct. You can’t work on a film for six years without being your own toughest critic. So you can’t really be distracted by the expectations based on your previous performance.
I think one of the major differences between Wonder Woman and Jessica Jones is that Wonder Woman is iconic and much better known, so you get into a lot of ridiculous expectations, like what’s her costume going to look like? Well, nobody knows who Jessica Jones is, except for fangirls and boys.
I think people in Europe are generally pessimistic about the future. They have low expectations; they’re not working hard to change things. When you’re a slacker with a pessimistic view of the future, you’re likely to meet those expectations.
I think some of the pressure comes from the expectations of other people. Like if your father played baseball, they expect you to be the big lifesaver or something when you play a sport.
I think sometimes you have high expectations for people because you have high expectations for yourself.
I think that people have expectations of themselves and other people that are based on these fictions that are presented to them as the way human life and relationships could be, in some sort of weird, ideal world, but they never are. So you’re constantly being shown this garbage and you can’t get there.
I think that sometimes when they see me in a movie they expect me to be something nasty. I mean, I play a lot of villains and you show up and they think maybe… That’s why it’s good to defy expectations sometimes.
I think that we could be more careful about what we’re saying to young women in terms of their expectations. It’s unrealistic to expect people to always be in designer clothes. Girls growing up deserve more freedom in how they look and how they feel about how they look.
I think the bar is higher these days in terms of audience expectations of authenticity.
I think the biggest thing you take from the stunt world is your understanding of the filmmaking process. For years, you’ve worked with every other department closely. You know hair, makeup, wardrobe, special effects, and you know what everybody’s needs are and their expectations. You also know how to collaborate with them.
I think the danger with using the term ‘trilogy’ is that it sets up particular expectations in the reader’s mind.

I think the President himself is a remarkably intelligent, decent, ethical man. I think he did very well, but I think the job builds up over expectations which all candidates contribute to including this President that simply cannot be fulfilled.
I think there are a lot of rules for women. We have a lot of expectations and a lot of rules for women. So we’re expected to march in a straight line, and when we don’t, all hell breaks loose.
I think there are things that you look for when you’re younger, and you think they are going to make you happier or make you feel complete. That’s not going to happen, and it’s really about living the moments. Eventually, you reach a point when you’re at ease with your life and don’t have any unrealistic expectations.
I think there’s a sort of satisfaction in defying people’s expectations.
I think, all my life, I’ve grown up and had high expectations, but that becomes so stressful.
I think, as most of us do, I put such high expectations on myself that this spills over onto other people. And not everyone is wired this way. Some people can shrug expectations off their shoulders like a cardigan, remaining cool and breezy. Others wear them like a parka with a stuck zipper, hot and stifling.
I think… as an actor, you never want to overspeak about something because, frankly, you want people to be excited about it but still have relatively low expectations so that people will feel better about it.

I was raised, myself, by extremely strict but also extremely loving Chinese immigrant parents. To this day, I believe that their having high expectations for me, coupled with love, was the greatest gift that anyone’s ever given me. And so that’s why, even though my husband is not Chinese, I try to raise my own two daughters the same way.
I was the first Navy, Marine or Air Force person who had been an astronaut to return back to the Air Force. I had certain expectations about what would be a reasonable and desirable position to be assigned to after my years of service.

I went into the ‘Idol’ audition with no expectations; that’s just the kind of person I am. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t hurt so badly, you know? But once I made it past the first round, and the second, and third – I started to realize, ‘Maybe my goals and dreams really are attainable.’
I will say that Surface has been a big disappointment for us and for Microsoft. Both of our expectations from the product were much greater than what came to be and not only that. We invested enormous amount into research and development and spent a lot of time and energy into it.
I would like to do more dramas when I find a good role that will allow me to politely upset people’s expectations of me as a comic actor.
I would say that engineering has been a very positive experience overall, but usually coming into the situation it would be one of being underestimated. People would actually have low expectations. But I would take advantage of it quite honestly, because I would take my time to underestimate the situation.
I would say that I am a jaded man beyond most expectations, but, like everyone else, I still have hope.
I wrote ‘Don’t Look Back’ in November 2011, and when I wrote the novel, it wasn’t contracted, so there was a freedom in that – no expectations or anything like that. It was also my first contemporary novel I’d written and sold, which was to Disney/Hyperion in January of 2012.

If girls hear that they can create and fulfill their own ideas of who they might be, those extraneous expectations can become less restricting and a lot more healthy.
If I want to know how I’m doing at work, I don’t wait for a pat on the back; I ask the people who will give me a clear, objective opinion. When I need a real, arms-wrapped-around-me hug, I go to someone who does that. I stopped getting disappointed by my expectations from non-huggers.
If we are going to compete in this world we’re in today, there is no possible way we can do it with lowering expectations and dumbing down everything. Children are going to suffer, and families’ hearts are going to be broken that their kids won’t be able to get a job in the 21st Century.
If we’re stuck with having expectations, there’s a very good reason to embrace positive ones: It’s that we often create what we anticipate.

If you’re playing a good guy, you show some darkness. If you’re playing a dark guy, you show something different, like humor, that will mix it up and hopefully surpass the audience’s expectations. What I’m battling all the time is complacency in the audience. I try to bring a little mystery to what might happen because that engages people more.

It’s almost like the better I do, the more my feeling of inadequacy actually increases, because I’m just going, ‘Any moment, someone’s going to find out I’m a total fraud, and that I don’t deserve any of what I’ve achieved. I can’t possibly live up to what everyone thinks I am and what everyone’s expectations of me are.’
It’s always better to shock people and change people’s expectations than to give them exactly what they think you can do. It’s not unexpected for me to be in a comedy film anymore; I’m no longer the underdog in that world. Not that I’m great or good at it or anything, it’s just that I’ve done a bunch of them, so you’re not shocked.

It’s great to be a blonde. With low expectations it’s very easy to surprise people.
It’s hard to be in the limelight and write songs that cater to fans that have expectations of you. We just want to write songs that we love, but all the different people with different ideas coming in make it difficult. We have to ask ourselves if we’re writing for the most important people: the fans.

I’ve always considered myself a Libertarian. While I was running for governor of New Mexico, the Republicans were totally inclusive of me; the party was open-armed, but they never thought I’d win.
